Summary
The land and underwater archaeological site in the area of Vičja Luka preserves traces of earlier use of the west coast of Brač. Prehistoric grave goods bear witness to links between the local community and the Greek world.
The archaeological site is not the same as the modern harbour or the legend about witches.
Graves and objects
Four graves covered with stone slabs were discovered in the harbour area, with multiple burials and rich grave goods. Finds include jewellery, vessels and protective equipment. The dating and interpretation of individual groups of objects require specialist study; general accounts emphasise prehistoric contacts with the Greeks.
The site in the story of the bay
The land burials and underwater finds show that the area was important before today’s coastal houses were built. They help explain the earlier maritime and social landscape of Bobovišća na Moru. Stories about the name Vičja Luka belong to oral culture and do not explain the archaeological finds.
Location and preservation
The pin marks the protected area of Vičja Luka approximately; it does not mark an individual grave or a dive site. Archaeological objects must not be removed; visits should follow conservation rules and permitted access to the coast.
