History and purpose
The parish church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nerežišća was built around 1750. It is associated with the village’s long ecclesiastical and administrative role on Brač, and its present form emerged during a period of Baroque rebuilding.
Structure and traces of the past
The church is built of dressed stone blocks, with a nave and two aisles and a raised central nave with a semicircular profile. The spacious sanctuary and side aisles have groin vaults, while the central nave has a barrel vault with sail-like sections. Ignacije Macanović designed the church and its monumental four-tiered bell tower. Inside are seven altars with altarpieces by F. Zaniberti, C. Ridolfi and A. Grapinelli.
Access and visiting
The church stands in the centre of Nerežišća and serves the parish. Check with the parish about visits to the interior, particularly outside services.
