A monument from 1938
A municipal publication marking the eightieth anniversary of the monument documents its unveiling on 23 October 1938. Preparations began several years earlier, with the participation of the local Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), the Hrvatski sastanak reading room and the municipality.
This local initiative brought together the memory of a politician and the work of cultural associations. In the history of the monument, it is important to distinguish between the earlier creation of the portrait and the date when the public monument was installed.
Augustinčić’s portrait
The bust was cast in bronze and placed on a tall stone pedestal. The photograph clearly shows Radić’s likeness and name on the plinth; the contrast in materials emphasises the portrait above the level of passersby.
Augustinčić’s body of work includes this portrait, which is also listed in an academy catalogue. The monument is not part of the later Park of Gratitude but a separate, older feature of the village square.
Access and visiting
The monument stands on Stjepan Radić Square in central Selca, in a public space beside stone buildings. It can be included in a walking tour of the park, church and other monuments in the village.
