Summary
The fortified house of Ciprijan Žuvetić is one of the key landmarks in the development of the harbour of Pučišća. Its construction links the protection of a coastal home with the emergence of a settlement of towers.
The first fortified residence prompted the construction of other family strongholds in the bay.
The beginning of a series of towers
Ciprijan Žuvetić built the kaštel in 1467, when coastal settlements were growing stronger and defence against attacks was needed. Other families followed his example, and towers became a defining feature of Pučišća. The fortified homes combined residence, property and defence.
The kaštel in the development of the town
The tower is part of the history of settlement in the bay of Pučišća by families from the island’s interior and the mainland. Its role should be understood together with the harbour centre and the development of houses along the coast, rather than as an independent military fortress separate from the village.
