Establishing the collection
The Supetar Public Library describes the establishment of the memorial collection as taking place around the 150th anniversary of Rendić's birth. The display was developed in collaboration with the Gliptoteka in Zagreb and the Split Gallery of Fine Arts, with support from the Ministry of Culture.
What the collection preserves
The display brings sculptures together with material showing how artworks were created: designs for monuments, altars and tombs, letters and photographs. Listed works include portrait busts, the Brač Water Carrier and allegorical figures. The library also published a catalogue with a foreword by art historian Duško Kečkemet.
A significant part of the collection consists of designs for the bell tower in Ložišća, monuments, altars and mausoleums, as well as letters and documents from the artist's education and later life. The works and designs on display help visitors understand Rendić's sculpture through the process of commissioning and shaping, not only through finished sculptures.
Allegory of the Mind outside the gallery
A bronze Allegory of the Mind stands in the park in front of the gallery. The official description associates the female figure with attributes of a book, a screw and a globe. This outdoor work is part of the encounter with Rendić's art before entering the collection, but it is not a separate museum building.
Rendić and Supetar
The gallery provides context for works located in Supetar itself and elsewhere on the island. It is part of the cultural facilities of the Supetar Public Library, so check the institution's official website for current opening hours and any changes to the display.
