History and purpose
The Church of the Holy Spirit (crkva sv. Duha) stands in Škrip’s village cemetery, on a site with a long history of use. Archaeological and art-historical studies examine its relationship with earlier Late Antique and Early Christian building phases, as well as the changes the building underwent.
Specialist literature dates the church to the Early Christian period, with some authors placing its construction in the 7th century. Research describes a basilican plan with a nave and two aisles, and a reconstruction in the Early Middle Ages. The dating and interpretation of individual phases should be read in the context of each study: conclusions depend on the analysis of architecture and archaeological finds, and not every detail is equally certain.
The studies also mention earlier Roman architectural fragments around the church and in the cemetery. Their presence points to earlier building activity in the vicinity, but does not, in itself, establish the precise purpose or appearance of the building that preceded the church.
What to see
The church survives as a historic religious building within the cemetery. Its exterior, layout and stone elements incorporated into its fabric reflect several periods of construction and alteration. Specialist studies focus particularly on its basilican plan, interventions in the Early Middle Ages and ancient architectural fragments.
Some interpretations connect earlier finds from the surrounding area with an ancient place of worship, including an inscription dedicated to Cybele. The connection with a specific building remains a matter of interpretation and should not be presented as an established fact.
