A stone mound in a prehistoric landscape
The Suhozid Ajmo! project publication lists Brkata among the especially prominent stone mounds around Gornji Humac. It describes the wider area through hillforts, stone mounds and later dry-stone structures. Brkata is part of this rocky island-plateau landscape.
Its basic form is a heap of stones in an elevated position. The precise date and purpose of this particular structure have not been reliably established.
Stone and traces of land use
On Brač, stone mounds and dry-stone walls have long stood alongside pastures and cultivated land. So a visible stone structure should not automatically be identified as a prehistoric wall.
Brkata also appears among the locations used in the cultural project Terra Croatica – Bročko blogo, in a scene devoted to the island’s prehistoric inhabitants. This is evidence of a contemporary interpretation of the site, not proof of a specific archaeological date.
Access and visiting
This rural site has no confirmed developed visitor access. Use existing paths and respect fences. Do not move stones, create new markers or take surface finds.
