Andrija Ciccarelli

PučišćaDruga imena: Andrija Čikareli1759–1823

Summary

A parish priest in Pučišća and historian who collected material on Brač, Split and Trogir. His book on the island and its nobility is an important trace of early systematic writing on the history of Brač.

He published ‘Opaske o otoku Braču i o njegovu plemstvu’ (‘Observations on the Island of Brač and Its Nobility’) in 1802.

A life connected with Pučišća

Ciccarelli was born and died in Pučišća, where he served as parish priest from 1795 to 1810. He combined his priestly duties with collecting and studying historical material. His connection with the place was therefore both biographical and professional.

Writing the island’s history

In his 1802 work ‘Osservazioni sull’Isola della Brazza e sopra quella nobiltà’ (‘Observations on the Island of Brač and Its Nobility’), he examined Brač and its nobility. He also studied the privileges of the island’s nobility. Such books should be read in the context of the estate-based society of the time and the ways local history was shaped.

A wider interest in Dalmatia

His interests extended beyond the island: he studied Split and Trogir and in 1811 published biographical sketches of notable people from Split and other Dalmatinians. His importance lies in preserving and examining historical material, not merely in having lived in one place on Brač.
