Karst opening on Vidova gora

The public institution More i krš describes the pit in its overview of Brač's natural heritage. It is a vertical speleological feature, not a cave with a level, developed tourist passage. Its funnel-shaped opening and position in wooded karst terrain help identify the site.

Vičja Pit and Vičja luka

In folk stories, the pit is also called the Witch's Pit or the Pit of the Evil Spirit. Tradition tells of an underground connection with Vičja luka on the other side of the island. This belongs to the island's folklore; the story itself is not evidence of an actual underground link between the two sites.

Natural heritage overviews and speleological reports provide different kinds of information about the pit. Specific speleological surveys, rather than estimates made from the edge of the opening, are the basis for comparing its depth and plan.

In a 2015 report, speleologists from Brač give its depth as approximately 96 metres. This figure comes from a particular survey account, not an estimate by a present-day visitor. A specialist comparison needs to take into account the survey plan, measurement starting point and date of the survey.

Access and visiting

The approach to the pit is not the same as safe access to a tourist cave. Vegetation may conceal the edge, which can be slippery. Descending is a speleological activity requiring appropriate skills and equipment; do not throw stones into the pit or approach its unprotected edge.
