Summary
Paloc, or House within a House, in Bol is an unusual complex in which a smaller house stands within the walls of a larger, unfinished building. A well-known local tradition links it to questions of ownership, relations between neighbours and the construction of a palace.
Paloc, or House within a House, in Bol is an unusual complex in which a smaller house stands within the walls of a larger, unfinished building. A well-known local tradition links it to questions of ownership, relations between neighbours and the construction of a palace.
A house within a palace
The building is known for the contrast between a modest inner house and a large outer shell. The municipal development plan describes Paloc as the Hranotić Palace, with façades showing different treatments of the stone and an external cistern beside the northern section. This unusual arrangement sets the complex apart from the more typical rows of stone houses in Bol.
Tradition and later use
Stories in Bol connect the complex's origins with the Vuković family and a peasant named Marko Silo, who refused to give up his house for a larger building project. The different versions of the story belong to local tradition; not every detail can be treated as a confirmed sequence of historical events.
The garden of Paloc served as the venue for Bol's theatre between 1998 and 2006. A municipal document from 2021 discusses the acquisition and restoration of the complex and describes its condition at the time and the history of its preventive protection.
Access and visiting
Paloc is in the old centre of Bol, beside Donja obala. The exterior walls and their relationship to the surrounding houses can be viewed from the street. Check whether entry to the interior or a visit is possible; the status recorded in older planning documents does not confirm a present-day right of access.
