Summary
An octagonal chapel designed like a mausoleum forms the centre of Milna’s historic cemetery, laid out outside the village in 1880. Burials began in 1895.
The description of the complex covers both the chapel and the cemetery.
History and purpose
Milna’s cemetery was moved outside the village in 1880 following a ban on burials inside churches and settlements. An octagonal chapel in the style of a mausoleum was built within the complex and dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.
Structure and traces of the past
Burials in the new cemetery began in 1895, and its high boundary wall was built in 1898. The elevated setting links the cemetery entrance with the village frontage and the entrance to the parish church. The local description interprets this as a deliberately designed Neoclassical arrangement of space.
Access and visiting
The church belongs to the cemetery complex. Be considerate of the setting and its purpose during your visit.
