Summary
An ossuary beside the parish church bears the date 1833 and a cross. The local account states that it contains human bones from the former cemetery beside the church.
The account of the bones’ origin follows the interpretation given on Milna Tourist Board’s website.
History and purpose
The ossuary beside Milna’s parish church is reached through the sacristy. One opening bears the date 1833 and a cross, while another serves for ventilation and the deposition of bones.
Structure and traces of the past
During repairs to foundations affected by damp, a cavity four to five metres deep containing a large quantity of bones was discovered. According to the conservation interpretation reported by the local source, these bones date from the period of burials in the churchyard cemetery, or čimatorij. They were probably transferred after such burials were banned under French rule in the early 19th century.
Access and visiting
The ossuary is a sensitive religious and memorial space. It is not intended for independent visits; any access must be arranged with the parish.
