Summary

Stonemasons from Brač made the memorial cross, 13 metres high and weighing 26 tonnes, which was blessed in 1998. It stands beside the remains of the medieval Church of St Vitus; an earlier cross from 1934 was demolished in 1944.

Approximate location on the summit of Vidova gora.

History and purpose

The memorial cross on Vidova gora is a contemporary memorial and devotional landmark.

Structure and traces of the past

The cross forms part of today’s experience of the viewpoint and the wider religious landscape of Vidova gora. Historical information about the nearby church remains should be distinguished from the history of the cross itself.

Access and visiting

The summit is a popular excursion destination, but check the road, weather conditions and safe access before arriving.
