History and purpose
On the islet of Mrdulja in the channel between Brač and Šolta stands a medieval church with a tower, combined in a distinctive fortified chapel. The islet is small and low-lying, and the building can be seen from the sea when passing through Splitska vrata.
Structure and traces of the past
A pilaster bearing an elongated incised cross is built into the corner of the main façade. The entrance and steps lead to the tower terrace above the chapel. On the basis of the interior form and walls, the source dates the building to the Late Renaissance. Together with Fort Baterija on Cape Zaglav, it held strategic importance in the conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries, and it was used again during the Russian occupation of Brač in 1807.
Access and visiting
The islet is not a conventional visitor site accessible by land. Check boat access, safety and any permits before planning a visit.
