A monument to the work of fishermen

The University of Split’s Arts Academy lists Martinić’s public sculpture Povuci potegni – Milnarski ribar (Pull and Haul – Fisherman of Milna) in its register of artistic achievements under 2021. A local tourism listing features it as the first stop on a themed trail about shipbuilding and seafaring.

The fisherman motif recalls work that connected boats, nets, fish processing and family life. The dedication focuses on this everyday work, not on a portrait of a particular named person.

A figure beside the sea

Photographs show a standing fisherman in the act of hauling something in, set on a rocky outcrop just above the sea. The bronze surface and its position on the shore connect the work with its natural setting.

The composition can be viewed from several angles along the coastal path. Its position on the rocks distinguishes it from a conventional town monument on a tall, enclosed plinth.

Access and visiting

The sculpture stands by Bijaka Beach, on the outer side of Milna harbour. View it from land; the rocks by the sea may be slippery and are not a platform for climbing on the statue.
