History and purpose
The Church of St Nicholas at Lanterna in Pučišća was built by the religious confraternity of St Nicholas in 1854. Its dedication to the patron saint of sailors is fittingly connected with its position at the harbour entrance.
Structure and traces of the past
After a lighthouse was built beside the chapel, local sources say the building was converted into a storeroom. It was restored in 2006, when a bronze statue of St Nicholas and a wooden altar shaped like half of a traditional Brač bracera boat were installed. These features connect the religious space with the maritime identity of Pučišća.
