History and purpose
The Chapel of St Spyridon, also known as St Spiridon, stands on the elevated Glavica area in Sumartin. Its exact construction date is unknown, but a municipal conservation survey estimates that it was built in the mid-19th century because it does not appear on the 1829 cadastral map.
Structure and traces of the past
It is a small rectangular stone building with a gabled roof covered in stone slabs. The main façade has an arched entrance with a projecting keystone, and inside is a small altar with a plaster statue of St Spyridon. In the early 20th century, while the new parish church was being built, Mass was celebrated in the chapel; on the saint's feast day, the statue was once carried in procession to the parish church and then returned to the chapel.
