History and purpose
The Church of St Nicholas stands in the cemetery northeast of Nerežišća. It served as the village’s parish church until the 15th century. Its present form dates from the early 14th century, when a single-nave building was added on the western side, adjoining the façade of an older Romanesque chapel.
Structure and traces of the past
The façade has a stone rose window and two windows with quatrefoil screens. The nave has a pointed vault with a Late Romanesque cornice, while the sanctuary has a barrel vault. Inside is the 14th-century tomb of Brač’s archpriests, bearing a Latin verse inscription naming Purča and Stojša.
