A musical motif in stone
A photograph of the work shows a seated figure with an instrument in front of the body. The head, hands and instrument are shaped without small realistic details; the motif emerges through the relationships between planes and rounded forms.
Part of the surface has been left rougher, while other parts are more smoothly finished. This contrast between worked and rough stone gives the figure a different appearance depending on the light and viewing angle.
A work beside Bol’s promenade
The sculpture is part of a series of artworks along the coastal footpath. It stands on a stone pedestal among greenery beside the path, not in an indoor museum display.
Recessed and projecting stone planes give the motif depth. From the front, the relationship between the instrument and figure is clear; from the side, it is easier to see how the composition remains within a single mass of stone.
Access and visiting
You can view the sculpture from the existing promenade. Look at it from several angles without touching the delicate projecting parts or climbing on the pedestal.
