A martyr and a knightly legend
Tradition presents George as a Roman officer executed during the persecution of Christians. His veneration spread from the eastern Mediterranean, and in the Middle Ages he developed into the ideal Christian knight. The fight with the dragon was added to the legend later and became especially important in art.
