Summary
A Renaissance sculptor and painter from Nerežišća. His signed stone altarpiece in the Church of St Peter connects his Brač origins with his work in Dubrovnik, Rome and southern Italy.
He signed the stone altarpiece in Nerežišća in 1578 as Nicolaus Lazaneus.
Nerežišća and a signed work
Lazanić came from Nerežišća and was active in the second half of the 16th century. His stone altarpiece with reliefs, dated 1578, is preserved in the Church of St Peter. The signature ‘Nicolaus Lazaneus’ firmly connects the artist with a specific work, although the exact dates of his life are unknown.

Sculpture in Dubrovnik and Rome
His signed sculptures of St Blaise and St Jerome, recognizable by their Mannerist features, are in the Church of St Blaise in Dubrovnik. He also made statues of Dalmatian patron saints for the Pontifical Croatian College of St Jerome in Rome; those works have not survived.

Painting in Italy
The surviving altarpiece painting of the Virgin Mary between St Elijah and St Nicholas in Bitonto shows that he also painted. His altarpiece on Brač therefore belongs to a wider Adriatic body of work, connecting stoneworking skill, religious commissions and the travels of an artist.
