Summary

A priest and historian from Povlja, author of a major study of the Benedictines. He researched the abbey in Povlja, settlements on Brač and the church history of Split.

Povlja and service around the island

Ostojić was born in Povlja. After theological studies, he served in Pučišća, Bobovišća and his birthplace. He earned a doctorate in canon law in Rome and then taught in Split. Brač was both his home and a subject of his research.

The abbey in Povlja at the centre of his research

The Benedictine abbey in Povlja was the subject of his 1934 monograph. He later published ‘Povlja: povijesni prikaz’ (‘Povlja: A Historical Account’). Through archival research, he connected the history of church institutions, works of art and changes in settlements.

A synthesis of Benedictine history

His most extensive work, ‘Benediktinci u Hrvatskoj i u ostalim našim krajevima’, was published in three volumes. Alongside monastic history, he studied the Split chapter, seminary and researchers’ correspondence. His local subject grew into research on Croatian church and cultural history.
