This summary follows the municipal plan; the monastery’s history can be expanded using a separate church source.
History and purpose
The Franciscan monastery in Sumartin developed on the site of a lodging house for Franciscan friars from Imotski and Makarska, who led people fleeing mainland Dalmatia during the Cretan War.
Structure and traces of the past
Construction of the present elongated two-storey building began in the mid-18th century under the administration and to the design of Friar Andrija Kačić Miošić. The monastery has no cloister, but spacious upper and lower gardens. The old Baroque Church of St Martin was replaced by a Romanesque Revival church with a transept and bell tower, built in 1913 to a design by Ć. M. Iveković.
